ABKC 🌐 American bully conformation: are we judging the standard or a trend? BY: Ricardo "PBK" Gonzalez

ABKC’s standard calls for breed type, balance, structure, heavy bone, muscularity and a powerful, effortless gait—while maintaining a healthy, functional dog with proportions appropriate to its frame.

So here’s the debate:

When two dogs are presented in the ABKC conformation show ring, should the dog that best represents the written standard win—even if the other dog has more breed type, head, bone, mass or overall “wow factor”?

And perhaps the bigger question:

Are current conformation show-ring preferences staying aligned with the ABKC standard, or are trends beginning to influence what breeders consider “correct” American Bully breed type?

Breeders, exhibitors and judges—where should the line be drawn between standard/breed type and exaggeration/overdone?

LET’S HAVE A REAL CONVERSATION ABOUT ABKC AMERICAN BULLY CONFORMATION.

We often hear the words “breed standard,” “correct,” “breed type,” and “show quality,” but what do those terms actually mean when two very different dogs enter the ring?

ABKC judging considers the overall dog—breed type, structure, balance, bone, musculature, proportions, movement, and presentation. But every dog has strengths and weaknesses, and not every quality carries the same visual impact.

So here’s the question:

If Dog A has exceptional wow factor, head, bone, mass, and breed presence, while Dog B has superior balance, structure, proportions, and movement—which dog better represents the American Bully?

Should a truly exceptional trait be enough to outweigh weaknesses elsewhere? Or should the emphasis always be on the complete package?

And where does personal preference come into play?

At what point does pursuing more head, more bone, more mass, or a more extreme look move away from balanced breed type—and at what point does being too conservative lose the very characteristics that make the American Bully unique?

If you 🫵🏼 were judging the class, what would you prioritize—and why?
